GRAND KNIGHTLY NEWS

Happy New Year!! I trust everyone had a wonderful Christmas spent with family and loved ones. Christmas is also a time of giving of talent and treasure. This council has a rich tradition of members sharing their time and talents all year long. I hope we can continue our history of giving into 2012 by increased member participation. We need your ideas and volunteerism.  As you return your membership renewal, please consider checking off areas on survey that you would like to serve our council. Also consider purchasing the 5200 Club tickets enclosed in your renewal packet to help support a needy Catholic student attend SHG.

Another area that needs more volunteer support is the BB-Q Committee which has a few members that have served for countless years who would love to mentor a younger volunteer to do some of the important tasks that have made the BB-Q a success. The committee will be convening January 30 to plan for 2012. The BB-Q is the most important fundraiser this council provides. Its participation and revenue have been slowly declining and I would like to reverse that trend this year. Help us keep the BB-Q alive and well by your participation this year. Many thanks to Jeff Boyer for chairing the event.

If you haven’t noticed, the banquet hall got a much needed facelift. Thanks to all who helped paint the hall. If you haven’t been recently, come out Sunday Jan 8th for our monthly breakfast buffet with proceeds benefitting UCP Land of Lincoln.

Calling all trivia buffs, January is full of trivia nights at Columbian Hall. Our Council is partnering with the Springfield Sertoma Club in sponsoring a trivia night Saturday January 28th with proceeds benefitting the Special Olympics. Check the newsletter for more details.

KC Council 4175 (Deveraux Heights) is sponsoring a 1, 2, 3, degree initiation Sunday Jan 29th. If you know a friend, son or father who would like to be member of this council, please invite them to this degree initiation.

As always I welcome your comments and ideas by calling me at 546-7359 or e-mail at dmgroesch@att.net

Fraternally yours

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

Happy and blessed 2012 to all!  I hope you are well as you read this and that you experienced a Christmas season that was warm, and with the love of Jesus abounding.  It is hard to believe that we are in 2012, but here we are!  Now I have to pay for my holiday “Yes, I’ll have one of those, no, two please” attitude.  Yep, I had two of everything, and the scales are screaming at me.  You can guess what is on my resolution list.

Ahh yes, resolution lists.  Besides trying to work on a tubby body, I also want to increase my concentration on fostering respect for life.  I think the pendulum is swinging back to a general respect for life as we are seeing the “Pro-abortion lies” come to light.  The greedy, true goals of Planned Parenthood have been aired.  Americans are stepping back to their original valuing of life.  Every good Christian (Catholic, or not) should continue the good fight to regain our Godly values and reject the hedonistic, me-centered, values being pushed by some of today’s secular supporters.  We have no long-term success at anything, without God.  Just look around!

But in this little note, I wish to focus on a piece of “right to life” that often gets passed over, omitted, or just short-changed.  That is the woman who chose abortion and has now realized what a horrendous mistake she made.  This woman may be living a hellish, guilt-ridden existence, unable to find relief or solace.  Yet, some just “continue on” sharing the secret with no one, as it gets heavier and heavier.  I have heard from several priests who have been called to nursing homes to hear the confession of women who have been carrying this burden all their lives and could only speak of it to another human as death loomed ever so near.  Some were not Catholic but wished to confess to a Catholic priest, even though they did not wish to convert.  Can you imagine the pain and the fear that these poor women are experiencing.  Please pray for them and their sisters, Jesus came to this earth to preach forgiveness and die on His cross for them, and us.  There is no sin He will not forgive of an honest, repentant, person.  And we must follow his example.  We must hate the sin of abortion and do all we can to stop it.  However, we must forgive and welcome she who made a tragic mistake in her choice.  There, but for the grace of God, are we.

Too, there is another who is all but forgotten.  That is the father of the aborted child.  He, too, can be in deep and painful grief.  Some who I have heard from did not urge the mother to have an abortion, but did nothing to try to save his child.  Whether they were complicit, or not, men often feel the guilt and try to bury it; though it can eat at some them for years and years.  Again, Christ’s blood is to wash away their sins too, if they are truly repentant.

How can we help?  There are fledgling programs to reach out to hurting people such as these.  “Project Rachel” is focused at post-abortive women, and some areas have a “Project Joseph” for men.  They help participants find Jesus and healing, even though, at first, they do not believe it is possible to find forgiveness for such a sin.  As I said, this program is in a fledgling stage (we do not have a Project Joseph yet) and we will need volunteer help.  Please keep your “ear to the ground” and if you see that you can help (if/when you hear the call) please do.  Of course, we can all pray for the success of the program and for those in need.  Abortion is a horrible sin that makes victims out of practically everyone involved.  Seldom does anyone choose abortion who truly believes they have a choice.

I think we can help these poor souls in this coming year.  As always, I will keep you in my daily prayers and I ask that you do the same for me.  Happy New Year.

May God be with you,

Deacon Dave Erdmann

INSURANCE CHECK-UP FOR 2012

Where did 2011 go?  It seems like it was just summer yesterday.  I hope you and your family had a great finish to 2011.  And now  2012 is speeding by.

Hopefully, you’ve established a few goals for this year.  I’ve learned a great tip regarding resolutions.  First, write them down.  It’s not too late if you haven’t already done this.  Commit your goals to paper and post it someplace you will see it often.  Writing down a goal is the first step towards achieving it.  I don’t know exactly how this works, but I’ve heard stories of the success this simple task can bring.  Whether your goal is to exercise more, give more to charity, read more or watch less television, you’re more likely to accomplish it if you write it down.

Second, resolve to have an expert look at your finances.  I recommend that you have a team of experts help you, and I should be among the first you sit with.  Schedule some time to visit with me, your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, and I’ll provide an “insurance check-up” that will quickly identify any gaps in your family’s life insurance program.  And you’ll want to fill those gaps now, not later.  Unlike many other products, you don’t just need money to obtain life insurance; you also need good health, and no one knows when your health could change.

Did I mention my check-up is free of charge?  When was the last time you received something for free that could be providing value to you and your family for generations?  Call me today.
